Senator Lakey, who said he worked on the proposal with the Idaho State Bar, told the committee there has not been an increase in state bar dues or license fees since 2011 and that the bar is funded by members rather than general fund dollars. He said the proposed increases vary by licensing category and range from about $15 to $60 per year, depending on the category.
Senator Foreman moved to send RS 32049 to print; Senator Lenny seconded the motion and the committee approved it. Senators asked a few clarifying questions; Senator Ricks briefly interjected a lighthearted joke about a "tab," which Lakey acknowledged and said the proposal did not involve that meaning of the word.
Lakey asked that the RS be printed so the measure can receive additional committee consideration during a merits hearing. Printing the RS does not enact a fee increase; it advances the request for further legislative review.
