Montgomery reopens Lagoon Park softball complex after $2.4 million renovation

City of Montgomery officials on Thursday marked the reopening of Lagoon Park’s softball complex with a ribbon-cutting ceremony after what city leaders described as a $2,400,000 renovation.
City Council President Cece Calhoun said the investment will allow Montgomery to “compete not just locally, but nationally and throughout this state to compete for tournaments,” and credited Mayor Steven Reed, the City Council, parks staff and the project design team for the work.
Brandon Dean of the City of Montgomery, who opened the ceremony, said the project “reimagined” the space and thanked the partners who worked on the renovations. Jeremy Reed, the mayor’s chief of staff, said the city used American Rescue dollars and bond proceeds from a city initiative to pay for the work.
Mayor Steven Reed thanked the City Council and staff at the event, singled out Parks and Recreation and other operations for their roles in the project, and said the city is continuing efforts to renovate other recreation facilities. Reed noted some facilities had “fallen behind a little bit,” and said the city is being “proactive” to bring parks up to date.
Officials described the recent work as “phase 1” of upgrades at Lagoon Park and said additional improvements are planned. Jeremy Reed also invited the public to a groundbreaking planned for new pickleball courts at Dean Fane Park the following day.
Representatives of project partners and consultants — named at the ceremony — joined elected officials for the ribbon cutting and photo opportunities.
The ceremony centered on celebrating completed work and promoting the facility as a venue for tournaments and community recreation; no formal votes or policy actions took place during the event.
