JFAC approves two insurance agency positions and state fire marshal pay adjustments

The Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee approved enhancement requests for the Idaho Department of Insurance on Feb. 14, including two new staff positions and pay adjustments for the State Fire Marshal program.
Noah Peterson summarized the department's requests and explained the department has two budgeted programs: Insurance Regulation and the State Fire Marshal. The package included a requested staff actuary (1.0 FTP, $201,900) and a regulatory compliance specialist (1.0 FTP, $121,200) funded from the Industrial Administration Fund, $48,100 for a compensation increase across the State Fire Marshal program, and $162,200 for replacement items (turnouts, cameras and two medium-duty pickups with canopies).
Representative Furness moved the package to add 2.0 FTP and $533,400 from dedicated funds; Senator Cook seconded. The motion passed on recorded votes: the Senate recorded 8 ayes, 1 nay, 1 absent and excused; the House voted unanimously, for a combined tally of 18 ayes, 1 nay, 1 absent and excused. The motion will carry a due-pass recommendation.
The committee's approval funds actuarial capacity and an internal regulatory compliance resource while maintaining the State Fire Marshal's equipment and pay levels through dedicated funds.
