The Appleton City Utilities Committee voted 5-0 to recommend a 4% increase in wastewater rates for general service and special hauled waste, effective Jan. 1, 2026, and approved a $5 truck scale fee for weight verification.
Director Stempa described the change as an annual notice to the committee and said ongoing significant projects may affect the need for further changes as part of a rate study next year. "...there's some significant projects that we're undergoing right now that that may change the need for a rate change as part of a future rate study, starting next year," Stempa said.
A committee member asked for confirmation that the increases apply to fee-for-service charges; staff confirmed the increase applies to the rates individuals pay. The motion to recommend the rate increase and the truck scale fee passed by voice vote with no opposition.
The committee’s recommendation will be forwarded to the Common Council for consideration. Staff noted the city will know more about capital needs this fall and during the rate-study work next year.
