Board supports reestablishing small Toucan Park; staff to coordinate naming and parking

The Grand Island Town Board discussed reestablishing a small, historic green at the end of Cox (referred to as Toucan Park) and asked staff and relevant boards to evaluate parking, maintenance and potential naming.
Jose raised the matter after consulting with the historic society, which reported that the park had been mowed and maintained historically but fell off the town’s maintenance schedule. Town staff said John Wenner and others had managed it for a time and that Highway Superintendent Crawford has offered to provide millings to establish a dedicated parking area to prevent ad hoc parking that hindered maintenance.
Board members agreed to refer the matter to the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) and Parks and Recreation and to consider the town’s naming policy; one board member suggested the historic society could propose a historically meaningful name for the site. The board will place the matter on the town’s naming-policy agenda and asked staff to document the site (photos and a site plan) once initial work is complete so officials and the public can discuss future uses and a name.
No formal resolution or expenditure was adopted at the meeting; the direction was to coordinate restorations, create a parking pad with millings, and return with a formal proposal for naming and maintenance.
