Lowe’s seeks additional outdoor storage; commissioners urge consolidation and screening

Lowe’s of Gallatin presented a revised final master development plan seeking expansion of outdoor storage and display areas on a 14.8-acre site at 1301 Nashville Pike.
Todd Bartok of Lowe’s said the store needs temporary additional storage primarily for seasonal mulch and heavy construction materials that arrive in large tractor-trailers and that the location is constrained compared with larger stores. Bartok asked the commission for direction on acceptable screening solutions and said Lowe’s would explore sample treatments and examples from other municipalities.
Planning staff noted portions of the site already had approved exterior-storage areas from earlier site approvals, but much of the newer storage has “crept” into parking areas and is visible from adjacent parcels including a planned condominium development. Staff suggested consolidating storage to a single area adjacent to the building, improving screening and ensuring fire-lane and access requirements are maintained. Commissioners recommended consolidating seasonal materials to one side of the site and exploring screening options rather than leaving items dispersed throughout the parking lot.
No final action was taken. Lowe’s said it will work with staff to propose screening and consolidation options and to provide clearer visuals of current conditions for the commission’s review.
