Council directs staff to draft kids' menus defaulting to water or unflavored milk

Commerce City’s council unanimously approved a motion on Oct. 6 to direct the city manager and staff to draft an ordinance that would require kids’ menus in the city to default to water or unflavored milk, while explicitly allowing families to purchase sugary beverages if they choose.
The motion was introduced by Councilmember Kim and seconded by Councilmember Andrew Dukes. Kim said the Adams County Health Department (ACHD) presented the concept to the city and that ACHD had reached out to local restaurant owners who support the initiative. ACHD also offered to cover the costs of any menu reprints so that businesses would not bear printing expenses associated with the change.
City Manager Rogers and staff clarified the policy would not ban sugary drinks — families could still purchase them — but would set a default for children’s menu beverages. Council voted unanimously to send staff to draft the ordinance for future council consideration.
