Pender County 4‑H reports strong participation; commissioners recognize local powerlifting champion

County 4‑H reported roughly 300 enrolled youth and wide-ranging programming; commissioners also recognized local powerlifter Desmond Jordan, who will represent Team USA at a world championship.
Tracy Spencer, the county Extension 4‑H agent with North Carolina State University Extension, updated commissioners on 4‑H activities and participation. Spencer said Pender County 4‑H has reached over 20,000 residents through programming this year and currently has about 300 youth registered on the 4‑H online system. Programs included STEM and horticulture camps, marine ecology field trips, a cooking/chopped challenge, shooting sports, livestock projects and leadership opportunities. Spencer said 21 youth competed in presentations and several advanced to district and state contests.
Spencer also reported partnerships with local organizations (Pender County Parks and Recreation, Pender County Beekeepers Association, Master Gardeners, Pender County Arts Council and local Rotary) and that they offered scholarships for summer camp and a range of school enrichment activities. Commissioners praised the work and discussed possible additional staffing to support expanding programs.
Separately the Board recognized Desmond Jordan, a Rocky Point native and owner of House of Gaines Gym, who serves on Team USA and will compete in the Team USA World Championship in Cape Town, South Africa. Commissioners presented a short recognition and noted local sponsors and youth programming connected to Jordan’s coaching of local athletes.
