LAKEVILLE, Oct. 2 — The Town of Lakeville Open Space Committee said it will prioritize trail mapping and an inventory of town‑owned parcels as part of implementation of the 2025 Open Space and Recreation Plan, and members volunteered to take initial steps including checking existing maps and consulting town staff.
Committee members said the town’s 2025 open space plan is pending state approval and that, once finalized, several short‑term goals in the plan (2025–2027 time frame) should be prioritized by the committee. Those include creating trail guides and brochures for town parks, adding visitor information to the open space web page, and producing a database of town parcels and their levels of protection.
Members identified parks with existing but limited trail information: Betty’s Neck, Ted Williams Camp, Tamarack, Vigers (also spoken as Vigors in the meeting), and Clearpond. The committee said current online maps show parking and general park areas but lack detailed trail maps and trail descriptions. Committee members agreed a practical near‑term product would be a simple brochure or webpage entry for each park listing facilities, trail length and whether pets are permitted.
Joan offered to check with Nancy (town staff) about any existing trail maps for Betty’s Neck; committee members also asked the chair to ask Town staff (Andrew, town administrator) about how trails are maintained and whether the highway or parks departments can assist with mapping and upkeep. The committee discussed volunteer maintenance for some trails and the possibility that the regional partner that produced the PPA map could assist with adding parcel IDs or mapping layers.
Committee members also reviewed outreach activities already underway: mailings to landowners about land‑conservation options, outreach at the Massachusetts Town Farmers Conference and an upcoming Wildlands Trust webinar scheduled for Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m., and a Lakeville event schedule including the Ted Williams trunk‑or‑treat on Oct. 19 (sensory‑friendly 3:30–4 p.m.; public 4–6 p.m.) and a holiday stroll Dec. 13. They noted the Town Arts & Music Festival runs 10 a.m.–4 p.m. and the committee’s brochures will be available there.
On resource questions, committee members said they are not ready to submit a CPA/CPC application this year and noted CPA funds can accrue for future years. Members assigned follow‑up tasks — checking for existing trail maps, talking to town staff about maintenance and mapping capability, and consolidating lists of town‑owned parcels and known protections — and will report progress at the Nov. 6 meeting.
No formal votes on acquisitions or funding were taken.
