Rotunda glass-floor restoration delayed to August 2026; team producing documentary

Robbie, a staff member for the Michigan State Capitol Commission, updated commissioners on progress and delays in the rotunda restoration project and said the restoration team is producing a documentary on the work.
Robbie described the fabrication process: pieces of glass undergo an annealing (slow-cooling) process of about 24 hours, then are cut on a high-pressure water-jet cutter to precise dimensions. He said the finished pieces have a variance of less than one-sixteenth of an inch and are lightly sandblasted to match the opaque finish in the lower rotunda.
The project team documented the fabrication with filmmakers. Robbie said the film will allow the public to see the process and the rotunda-restoration work that began a few years ago.
Robbie said phase 1 final pieces were due to arrive within one to two weeks and that crews will then remove partition walls and begin phase 2. He said the project had originally targeted a late-spring finish (late May to early June) but a combination of equipment breakdowns and other delays has pushed the schedule to an August 2026 completion.
Robbie characterized the work as a precision, one-time intervention and said the commission has received significant local and trade-media interest. He asked commissioners to expect further status updates as the installation continues.
