Avery County commissioners approved a series of budget amendments and grant acceptances Oct. 6 after the finance office presented items affecting multiple departments.
Major items included acceptance of a third year of a victim-services grant from the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) adding $64,083 to the sheriff’s office budget to fund a victim-services position (salary, benefits and contract/supplies). The board also accepted a Small Rural Tribal grant to purchase body cameras ($14,566) and approved a cooperative law-enforcement agreement with the U.S. Forest Service that will reimburse the county for deputy salary and equipment ($65,000 combined).
Other approved amendments included rolling $57,000 in budgeted capital for a radio upgrade into the next fiscal year, funding for an emergency generator to power county fuel pumps ($15,150), $7,000 for paving the new senior-center property, $9,799 to cover agreed back pay for an agricultural extension agent (county portion), and $7,500 for replacement desks/furniture at Emergency Management after flood damage (to be purchased with insurance reimbursement funds rolled into fund balance).
The board approved a $510,955 passthrough of state funds to Avery County Schools to replace the HVAC system at Cranberry Middle School, and $160,132.50 to reimburse the school system for the final invoice in the high-school kitchen renovation project. The finance office also reported updated occupancy-tax receipts for the new TDA: August receipts totaled $129,591.52, up from about $75,000 in August of the prior year.
Each amendment was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
