Commissioners approve sheriff’s surplus-property resolutions allowing private sale to officers and transfers to other agencies

The Avery County Board of Commissioners approved several sheriff’s-office resolutions Oct. 6 to declare equipment surplus and specify disposition methods.
County staff presented a memorandum listing surplus shotguns and rifles the sheriff’s office no longer needs. The board authorized private sale of certain weapons to officers who had been issued them, with a minimum price of $150 per shotgun and $300 per rifle. The notice for private sale must be published before completion, staff said.
Separately, the board declared additional equipment surplus and authorized no-cost transfers of serviceable items to other units of government (Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, Spruce County Police Department and the City of Valdez Police Department) as requested by the sheriff. Staff noted these items were models no longer issued by the department and could be useful to other agencies.
The board also approved a resolution to discard four tasers that staff and the sheriff identified as not suitable for transfer; the board found selling the tasers to the public could pose a public-safety risk and approved discarding them.
Each resolution was moved, seconded and approved with recorded 'ayes.' The board also discussed that the tasers and certain models were no longer compatible with the sheriff’s current rotation.
