Sheriff's office to accept $25,000 FDOT grant for traffic enforcement, lasers and overtime

The sheriff's office told the commission the grant allocates $15,000 for officer overtime concentrated on traffic violations (with emphasis on teen drivers) and $10,000 for equipment. The presentation said the county will use the equipment funds to buy about five new laser speed devices to supplement existing radar equipment.
A sheriff's office representative said this will be the first laser purchase in several years for the department and that additional pending grants could increase the total number of lasers to seven during the year. The presenter confirmed the grant is fully funded by FDOT and requires no local match.
The board approved the grant acceptance by voice vote after a motion and second.
The equipment purchase and overtime are grant-funded; staff indicated the county will proceed with procurement and overtime scheduling under the grant conditions.
