Mauldin committee forwards $250,000 city hall renovation request to full council

The Mauldin Public Works committee voted Oct. 6 to forward to full council a $250,000 request to fund interior renovations and building upgrades at Mauldin City Hall, including replacement of the facility generator, new electronic locks, ADA door upgrades and new flooring.

City Administrator Seth (last name not specified) told the committee the current generator “is original to this facility” and does not power the entire building during outages; the request would replace and upsize the generator so the building could operate in emergencies as a command center. The package also includes repainting downstairs areas and stairwells, new push-button doors similar to those at the senior center to permit safe after-hours access to the police department area, and replacement of the current carpet.

The administrator said the estimate includes a contingency and noted the projected total is $250,000. Committee members asked whether electrical work for electronic locks and ADA doors was included; the administrator responded the electronic-lock and ADA quotes were turnkey and covered in the estimate. One council member urged staff to consider harder-wearing flooring (laminate or other non-carpet options) for the high-traffic lobby; the administrator said the budget is conservative and if generator work and other items come in under budget there may be discretion to select different flooring as the project proceeds.

A motion to approve the $250,000 request as submitted and forward it to full council carried without opposition.

The committee did not make a final procurement decision; the action forwarded a budget/expenditure recommendation to the full council for final approval.

Members asked staff to return to the committee with contractor punch lists and to note whether flooring installation will require a contractor versus in-house work.
