Leonia Board introduces new administrators, teachers and support staff

The Leonia Board of Education on Oct. 14 heard introductions of new district hires across central office and all three school buildings.
Superintendent Zanti Karamanos opened the board’s annual “meet the staff” meeting by introducing new central-office and building staff and asked the board to welcome them. The introductions included human-resources and payroll hires, a new curriculum supervisor for math and science, multiple classroom teachers and a new school safety officer.
School and central-office leaders presented brief biographies and employment backgrounds for each hire. The central office additions included Ashley Banks, described as a human-resources officer with more than a decade of experience and an MBA in human resource management from William Paterson University; and Marilyn Martinez, a payroll and benefits coordinator who manages the district’s payroll process and W-2 production. The board also heard that Glenn Stevenson joined the district as a supervisor of math and science with more than 30 years of experience and service on the New Jersey Next Generation Science Standard adoption committee.
At Leonia High School, introductions included Astrid Flores, a mathematics teacher; Sylvia Cates, the district’s media specialist; Cameron Bernstein, an English teacher; Carla Pena, a world-language teacher; and Matt Tutoro, a new school safety officer who previously retired from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department. Leonia Middle School and the district’s other schools introduced additional hires: fifth-grade teacher Grace Waidle; art teacher Daniel Kim; special-education teacher Daniel Esposito; Michelle Park and Sonia Brown on the special-education team; and other building-level additions announced during the meeting.
Karamanos also told the board she planned to add an item to the agenda recommending Andrew Covid for the position of assistant superintendent of schools. She said the district’s search screened roughly 27 applicants and included multi-stage interviews. The formal recommendation appeared later on the agenda under new business for board action.
Superintendent Karamanos closed the introductions by leading a short break for refreshments; the “meet the staff” portion of the meeting concluded before the board moved on to scheduled presentations and reports.
The introductions were informational; no personnel appointments were finalized during the public portion of the meeting. Formal personnel votes appeared later in planned closed-session business and under the board’s new-business consent items.
