A representative of Newton Investment Management updated the Sarasota Police Officers Pension Board of Trustees on the firm’s dynamic large-cap value strategy and recent performance.
Terrence O’Toole, relationship manager for BNY Newton, summarized the team’s investment approach, noting its long-tenured portfolio managers and research resources. O’Toole said the strategy seeks value names trading at multi-decade discounts with strong fundamentals and an institutionalized risk framework that limits position size and excludes derivatives and shorts.
On recent performance, Newton reported a slight quarterly lag versus its benchmark but continued outperformance over longer periods. The team identified recent detractors including communication-services and some health-care holdings (Alcon and Baxter) and cited utility underweight as a drag. Contributors included materials (CRH), industrials (L3Harris, Hubbell) and energy positions such as Phillips 66.
The Newton representative emphasized the team’s commitment to large-cap value style purity and said prior quarters of relative underperformance have historically been followed by a return to outperformance. No board action was required.
