Residents near Lake Avenue told the Worcester City Council that foul, persistent odors from the Lake Avenue pumping station have become intolerable and harm quality of life. Robin Rhodes and other neighbors urged the council to support an order filed by Councilor Candace Merril Carlson to investigate and mitigate the odors.
Rhodes said the smell is “constant” and that it gives a misleading impression about local water quality; she encouraged the city to examine scrubber technology and other odor-control systems used elsewhere. Council members agreed to send the request to the city manager for review and report back on potential remedies, technical feasibility and likely costs.
What happens next: The city manager’s office and DPW/Water & Sewer representatives will review the pumping station’s operations and potential odor-control options and report to council; staff indicated that engineering or equipment changes could be required and that neighborhood communication would be part of the response.
