ALDOT outlines STIP timeline; public comment process to resume ahead of next planning cycle

ALDOT staff explained that the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) is a federally prescribed four-year, fiscally constrained plan, described the online STIP tools, and said public involvement for the next STIP renewal will begin in about 14 months.
Tom (ALDOT staff) reminded the committee that the STIP is a federally prescribed, four-year, fiscally constrained program and that the department—s website provides interactive access to projects by county or region. He said the committee is currently in the third year of the existing STIP and that public involvement to renew the plan will begin in roughly 14 months and run through the multi-year update process.
Tom said the long-range plan materials being publicized now are part of a separate, longer-range planning effort (a 20-year outlook) that complements the STIP. He noted ALDOT has improved the STIP website to make it easier for local governments and the public to find projects and that local/regional planning commissions help promote public comment opportunities.
Senator Linda Coleman-Madison asked about the public comment survey link and said she had difficulty finding it; Tony Harris (ALDOT) said he would make sure the senator—s office receives the link and explained that ALDOT is publicizing the comment opportunity through news media, social media and regional planning commissions. Tony and Tom encouraged members to contact ALDOT staff or their regional office if they have questions about projects in the STIP.
