School 5 students demonstrate social-emotional learning; board honors boys track coach

Students and staff from Winslow Township School 5 presented the school's social-emotional learning (SEL) program at the Board of Education's Oct. 22 meeting, describing weekly "Wellness Wednesday" activities, incident-reporting tools and a student pledge to "lead with kindness."
Doctor Carter, principal of School 5, introduced a team of teachers and seven named students who described how the school rotates instruction across five SEL competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision-making. Students said the school uses a green student incident form and a "rock form" the counselor uses to triage urgency; students explained the rock form has a small rock (non-urgent) and a large rock (urgent) option to help the counselor prioritize visits.
"We choose to lead with kind," the students said in their closing remarks.
The board praised the students' presentation as an example of character education in the district.
The meeting also recognized Coach Curtis Custis (presented in the meeting as Custis/Cussis) for a highly successful boys indoor and outdoor track season. Custis was presented with NJSIAA and South Jersey Boys Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year (2024-25 winter season) citations and other accolades noted in the presentation, including sectional and state championships and school records in relay events. Coach Custis thanked board members, colleagues and family during brief remarks.
The awards and student presentation were accepted as information; no board vote was required.
