Saunders Road project on hold amid litigation; Water main repairs and Thorngate investigation advance

Summary
IDOT-listed Saunders Road STP is on hold due to litigation affecting multiple paving projects; Lake County’s opportunity to rebuild a lift station may precede village construction. Meanwhile, a Braeburn water-main break was repaired ahead of schedule and Thorngate boring and soils testing are under way.
The Saunders Road resurfacing project is on hold, village officials said, after an update from the Community Services director that the Illinois Department of Transportation has paused multiple paving contracts amid litigation.
Director Witt told the board that GHA contacted IDOT and was told the Saunders Road project is “on hold.” Witt said 23 other projects are in the same status because of litigation between the parties involved. The delay gives Lake County an opportunity to reconstruct a lift station before the village starts work on Saunders Road, Witt said, but recent bids for related work came back about $2 million over a $5 million budget and will need to be repackaged.
On a separate, more immediate matter, contractors mobilized to repair a water-main break at Braeburn and expected to finish by the end of the week, Witt said; what would have been a two-week repair was compressed into under a week.
Witt also reported on Thorngate: after reviewing two proposals, the village selected Hough & Hough to perform boring; the company expects to finish boring within two to four weeks and deliver a soils analysis about two weeks after that. Witt said the soils study will help determine the root causes of recurring issues in the Thorngate water-main system.
Finally, Witt reported that previously authorized fire‑hydrant flushing and exercising work has been completed by GHA.
The board heard no motions tied directly to Saunders Road at this meeting; project timing will depend on Lake County coordination and rebid outcomes.
