Martins Ferry council unanimously backs school district grant application for campus safety

Martins Ferry City Council on Thursday voted to provide a letter of support for the Martins Ferry City School District’s application to the Abandoned Mine Land Economic Revitalization Program, a grant the mayor described as 100% funding for work around the school campus.
The motion, made by Councilman Michael Schramm and seconded by Councilman Rick Rogers, was approved after a roll-call vote. Council members who recorded “yes” during the roll call included Schramm, Hunker, Eschman, Armstrong, Rogers and Yezo. The mayor asked council members to sign the support letter before they left the meeting.
Council President said the grant application targets safety improvements on and around the school campus, including repairs where roads intersect and other campus-area needs. The mayor described the request as a “100% grant” and said the city’s role was limited to providing a letter of support so the school district could submit its application.
The motion carried and council members were asked to sign the support letter at the council desk before the end of the meeting. No additional conditions or funding commitments from the city were tied to the letter of support.
