The Village of Shorewood Board of Trustees unanimously adopted Resolution 2025‑15 on Oct. 13, a statement reaffirming support for the U.S. Constitution and the rule of law.
Trustee Justin McGovern introduced the resolution, which highlights checks and balances, equal application of the law and a rejection of rhetoric or actions that elevate any individual above the law. McGovern said the resolution was written on behalf of residents and was amended slightly from a prior draft; the board accepted a friendly correction to a typographical error before the vote.
Several trustees spoke in favor. Trustee Warren said the board should reaffirm these foundational principles “at times of division and uncertainty.” Trustee Ersink raised concerns about whether taking a public stand could draw attention or repercussions for the village; other trustees acknowledged that risk but said the statement is nonpartisan and grounded in constitutional principles. A resident who addressed the board during the discussion urged visible support for the principles, saying, “Silence is compliance.”
Trustee McGovern moved adoption of Resolution 2025‑15; the motion carried on a roll‑call vote, 7‑0. The resolution was signed by Village President Anne McCaig.
