The West York Area School District board completed the first reading of a package of policy updates that will return for a second reading and a vote next month.
Key items in the package include revisions to Policy 102 (academic standards) clarifying academic content areas and adding personal finance/financial-literacy language despite a PSBA recommendation to omit it; Policy 105 (curriculum), which explicitly references School Code requirements to teach items such as Constitution Day and related observances; and Policy 122 (co-curricular activities) and Policy 123 (interscholastic athletics), which clarify academic eligibility and attendance expectations and add name/image/likeness (NIL) language for high school students.
The board also reviewed Policy 146.1, a new trauma-informed approach policy that codifies many of the district’s current practices around wellness, attendance and student supports and supplements training expectations for board members. Diabetes management policy was revised to add an elementary-level diabetes fact sheet for parents/students. Two policies (218.1 and 218.2 in materials) included district-specific language that had been inadvertently removed in prior PSBA updates; the administration said those lines are marked with an asterisk to preserve locally adopted language going forward.
Policy 702.1 on crowdfunding was updated to distinguish between small, consumable family donations (allowed) and broad public fundraising via third-party websites (not allowed). The packet also included federally required updates to the Title I parent and family engagement policy.
Administration said the policies will be returned next month for a second reading and board action; staff indicated they will present a fuller proposal related to Policy 320 (not on this first-read batch) at a future discussion meeting when the board agenda is released.
