Becker County board approves $62,330 in abatements and interest to Minnesota Energy Resources after state tax-court orders

Becker County commissioners voted Oct. 8 to approve property-tax abatements and associated interest totaling $62,330 to Minnesota Energy Resources following state action that reduced the assessed values on several state-assessed parcels (transmission and distribution lines).
County staff explained that these are state-assessed properties for which the state or state-related entities had a tax-court decision or adjustment; the abatements refund taxes that were previously collected for the parcels. "These are transmission and distribution lines, power lines," the county assessor said when asked for parcels' type. The board approved issuing the refunds, noting that school districts and townships will also see corresponding reductions in their receipts because the abatements reduce the tax base.
Finance staff said the county did not have a dedicated budget line for such abatements. The board approved the abatements and interest by voice vote and asked finance staff to account for the refund in the county's budget planning.
