Hamilton County Sheriff's Office to apply for $11.6 million violent-crime intervention grant

Hamilton County commissioners authorized the county mayor on Oct. 15 to apply for and, if awarded, accept up to $11,617,197 from the Tennessee Office of Criminal Justice Programs’ Violent Crime Intervention Fund (Resolution 10 25–37).
Sheriff Austin Garrett told the commission the resolution authorizes the application and acceptance; if the county is awarded funds he said he will return before the commission with a specific spending plan.
Commissioner Sharp asked whether the grant requires a local match; the sheriff said no match is required. Commissioners approved the authorization on roll call.
Why it matters: If awarded, the grant would represent a substantial one-time infusion for violent-crime intervention programs; specifics of proposed uses will be subject to future review and approval by the commission when the sheriff returns with a spending plan.
