Schools outline College Application Week supports and new NC College Connect outreach

Henderson County Schools staff and counselors described districtwide activities supporting the Oct. 20–26 CFNC (College for North Carolina) College Application Week and the newly expanded NC College Connect effort.
Assistant administrators said schools are running financial-aid nights, college-application events, and in-class senior guidance to increase FAFSA completion and college applications. North Henderson High runs an extensive week-long program that divides a media center into “enrollment, enlistment and employment” stations where seniors meet college representatives, military recruiters and apprenticeship coordinators; the school aims to have every senior apply to at least one postsecondary option during the week.
Counselor Lee Putnam and parent Jennifer Furr spoke to the board: Furr said a financial-aid workshop at West helped her son receive five scholarships, four of them local; Putnam described West Henderson’s senior outreach and said weekly October resources from CFNC and visits by regional CFNC representatives help families navigate residency determination, FAFSA and application fees. Staff noted participating colleges waive many application fees during the week and that colleges across the state and transfer partners participate.
Superintendent Garrett asked the board to encourage families to contact school counselors for assistance; staff said future CFNC resources and regional representative visits will be listed on school websites and publicized to families.
