Committee approves updated multiuse trail sign with phone, dawn-to-dusk hours and Florida statute reference

The Broadway Crested Trails and Greenway Advisory Committee voted unanimously on Oct. 2 to approve a revised multiuse trail rules sign intended for trailheads and access points in Loxahatchee Groves.
The sign, described in committee materials as 2 feet by 3 feet, will be produced with edits the committee requested during public discussion: change the header text to read “Multi use” (rather than “Multipurpose”), add a citation to the Florida Statutes, replace unrestricted hours with a dawn-to-dusk restriction, and list the Town Hall front-desk phone number as the nonemergency contact. The committee also directed staff to explore whether the county sheriff’s nonemergency number should be displayed for after-hours reporting.
Public commenter Mary McNicholas urged the committee to coordinate with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office on enforcement and recommended adding a “see something, say something” reporting line on the sign. Committee members discussed placement at multiple trail access points, adding directional maps at main trailheads, and installing durable, weatherproof signboards.
Committee members and staff also discussed operational issues tied to signs, including garbage collection and who would empty cans placed at trailheads. A representative from a trail partner noted the difficulty of staffing daily trash pickup and suggested placing trash containers at high-use locations (such as the Town Center Commons) rather than along every segment of trail.
After incorporating the suggested edits, the committee approved the sign design. The motion recorded in the meeting minutes was to accept the trail signs “as with the changes made.” The recorded outcome was a 3-to-0 vote in favor.
Following approval, staff said they would determine whether the sign requires Town Council approval and — if not — proceed with production and placement. Committee members asked staff to confirm the specific front-desk phone number to print on the sign before final production.
The committee also asked staff to prepare a sign-placement map and to coordinate with law enforcement on recommended nonemergency contacts and any enforcement guidance for no-motorized-trail rules.
