Commission awards sidewalk rehabilitation contract, funds set for two fiscal years

The East Grand Rapids City Commission authorized staff to award the city’s sidewalk rehabilitation and replacement contract to AJZ Concrete, the qualified low bidder, for work in two upcoming fiscal years.
Deputy City Manager Lefebvre said the program, funded through the dedicated streets and sidewalks millage, targets defects in designated zones and uses cutting, grinding and replacement to eliminate hazards. He told commissioners the city now has about 80 miles of sidewalk and that staff added roughly two miles of sidewalk on the north side of the city this year.
The bid was solicited through Kent County Purchasing. Staff recommended contracting with AJZ Concrete and presented estimated fiscal-year allocations: up to $200,000 for fiscal year 2025–26 and up to $250,000 for fiscal year 2026–27 for the targeted rehabilitation program.
Commissioners praised the project’s potential ancillary benefits. Commissioner Burdick said more uniform sidewalks should improve snow removal. No members of the public commented on the sidewalk item when asked. The motion to award the contract passed on a voice vote: “Motion carries,” the mayor announced.
The contract award is limited to the millage funding levels the commission approved; staff said work will continue in targeted zones until the allocated funds are expended.
