The Oceanside Union Free School District Board of Education on Oct. 15 approved a series of routine and agenda items by voice vote. Highlights of approved motions follow; each motion was presented, moved and seconded on the record and recorded as passed.
- Minutes: The board accepted the minutes of the Sept. 17, 2025 regular meeting for file as submitted.
- Financial reports: The board accepted monthly treasury and financial reports, transfers, internal claims audit and related documents to be filed for audit.
- Facilities uses: The board approved use of the School 8 auditorium/gym by Maria Mason of the Oceanside Chorale on Dec. 14, 2025, contingent on required Department of Community Activities information; and approved use of the School 7 cafeteria by Zoe Capanero for the district Friendsgiving on Nov. 10, 2025, subject to standard conditions.
- Personnel and retirements: The board approved professional personnel items, civil service personnel items and hourly employee recommendations. It accepted resignations for the purpose of retirement for two teachers: Janine Garcia (world language) retiring in November and Lisa Mayer (long-term science teacher) retiring in January. The board also approved the addition of a head custodian at Oceanside High School, hiring James Murphy.
- Coaching staff: The board approved the 2025-26 high school and middle school winter coaching staff list as presented.
- Special education placements: The board approved special education placement recommendations as recommended by the Committee on Special Education (CSE/CSE chair) dated Oct. 15, 2025.
- Scholarships and awards: The board established a mathematics award of distinction for three years beginning with the Class of 2026, and approved the Anthony and Meola Scholar-Athlete Scholarship for three years beginning with the Class of 2026.
- Vehicle purchases: The board authorized the purchase of 2025 Ford Transit 250 vans included in the 2025-26 budget. The cost of each vehicle was authorized not to exceed $110,800; the district will lease the vehicles via a tax-exempt municipal lease underwritten by M&T Bank (or affiliate) with a $1 purchase at lease conclusion.
- Field trips and student placement policy: The board approved updated student overnight field trips for the 2025-26 school year and approved a request under board policy 03/2013 to allow two students to complete sixth grade at School 9E after a family move within the district; the district will not provide transportation in that case.
Each item was accepted for file or approved by voice vote with no roll-call tallies recorded in the meeting transcript. Board members routinely asked clarifying questions; several board members, including Sandy Scholl, Bob Transom and Mr. D'Ambrosio, thanked staff and community groups for support of programs and extracurriculars.
What happened: a docket of routine administrative, personnel, student-activity and fiscal items was approved. Why it matters: the approvals implement staffing changes, extracurricular supports, contract/lease authority for vehicles in the adopted budget and approvals for community use of school facilities.
