District staff previews assessment calendar, dyslexia screener and capital projects including roof replacements and surplus list

Assessment calendar and dyslexia screener: Mr. Green said the calendar follows state guidelines and noted the new state-required dyslexia screener for elementary schools—a brief assessment administered multiple times per year. "Very very little, almost no changes from last year other than the state required dyslexia assessment, which is a 1 minute, 3 times a year assessment in our elementary schools," he said. A board member asked whether the 1-minute screener is diagnostic; Mr. Green said it is a quick indicator that, if it signals concern, leads to further testing. The calendar will appear on the district's October agenda for approval.
Roof replacements: Mr. Green described two capital roof projects in the five-year plan. One is a complete flat-roof replacement for IRA (projected at $2,800,000 with a $280,000 contingency, bringing the total to $3,080,000) and the other is a $980,000 replacement for the central administration/rotunda area at Liberty Magnet with a $98,000 contingency (total approx. $1,078,000). He said both projects will be on the next board agenda with a recommended award to Garland Roofing.
Surplus equipment: Mr. Green said the surplus list contains 24 items, including aging refrigerators (some 25–40 years old), several technology items, and a 2018 Toyota Prius from IT that is no longer serviceable; everything listed has no current market value. The surplus list and capital items will be scheduled for board action in upcoming agendas.
Board members asked clarifying questions about NAEP participation and testing time estimates by grade; Mr. Green said NAEP samples have been small in past administrations and testing minutes vary by grade, with fifth and eighth grades taking additional science assessments on the three-year cycle.
No formal approvals were taken at the workshop; Mr. Green said items will be placed on upcoming agendas for board approval.
