Board awards contracts for park fencing project to curb vandalism and illegal camping

The San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors on Oct. 21 approved, as part of the consent calendar, awarding a contract to All Steel Fence Incorporated for fencing work on nine county parks and authorized associated material purchases. The vote on the consent calendar passed 5-0.
Supervisor Ricardo Guardia explained he supported the project as a security and preservation measure after years of vandalism, illegal dumping and unauthorized camping had damaged park facilities and irrigation systems. "I wish we didn't have to fence them, but I really truly believe it would be...against our best interest if we were to invest in these parks and anything we do, could be damaged," he said.
Dan Wertz, director of General Services, told the board the award will allow the department to move forward with improvements, including future restroom and lighting upgrades, and that the contract uses two local vendors to speed completion. He said once notice to proceed is issued contractors will have 120 days to complete the work.
The agenda item listed an award amount to All Steel Fence of $289,380 and authorized related material procurement estimated at about $1.1 million for the project. Supervisors said the work is intended to be a first step that will allow the county to add lighting and other amenities in the parks after the fences are installed.
Ending: The consent calendar motion approving the award and associated authorizations carried 5-0; staff will return with schedules and implementation details as work is mobilized.
