Port Hueneme City Council recognized Amgen’s local staff and volunteers for participation in International Coastal Cleanup during the Oct. 20 meeting.
Councilmember Stephen Gama introduced Jim Fisher, senior director of corporate engineering and sustainability at Amgen, and Tanya Nunez, a local Amgen staff member and Waianae resident who coordinates volunteer efforts. Fisher told the council Amgen has run multiple coastal cleanup sites globally and described the company’s environmental targets, including a corporate initiative that has set multi-year goals for carbon neutrality, water reduction and waste reduction.
Nunez, who said she grew up in Port Hueneme and represents Chumash and Chickasaw heritage, described local volunteer turnout: she said this year more than 180 volunteers participated locally and that Amgen’s global program included more than 20 sites. She thanked the city and individuals who supported volunteer access to local beaches and presented Councilmember Gama with a certificate of appreciation.
Why it matters: Corporate volunteer programs can supplement municipal beach stewardship and raise community awareness of coastal litter and habitat issues; the recognition highlighted a public–private partnership in restoration and stewardship efforts.
