Council members discussed the city manager job description and next steps for hiring on Oct. 14. Gina reported that Patrick Marsh from MTAS (Municipal Technical Advisory Service) was reviewing the council’s draft and would return a revised proposal quickly; she said he expected to have suggested tweaks by Friday.
Gina (staff) proposed scheduling a work session after the MTAS revisions are received and then holding a special-called meeting if the council wished to approve the final proposal without waiting until the regular November meeting. Several council members said they preferred to review MTAS’s suggestions before making additional changes.
Council members noted that MTAS’s services are provided at no charge but that advertising and other search expenses could incur costs to the city; they agreed the city would need to budget for any advertising or broader search expenses beyond the MTAS-provided candidate outreach. Council members also discussed keeping the job posting from being unnecessarily delayed while still ensuring the job description is accurate and complete.
No formal votes were required for this agenda item. The council instructed staff to coordinate with MTAS, circulate the revised job description to council members, and schedule a work session to review it. If the council agrees at the work session, the council may follow with a special-call meeting to approve the final job description and authorize posting.
