The Story County Board of Supervisors voted Oct. 14 to allocate an additional $28,000 to the Human Services Center HVAC project after staff reported updated equipment costs exceeded the original budget.
Joby, presenting the request as county staff, said the revised equipment estimate was $20,400 higher than the amount budgeted and cited factors including tariffs and recent EPA refrigerant code changes. Joby told the board that the county has a budgeted but lower-priority server-room expansion project that could be deferred if necessary to cover costs in future budgets.
“We budgeted based off of the equipment estimate we received last about a year ago this month. A lot of things affected; equipment cost more,” Joby said.
Board members asked questions about alternatives and praised the approach of reallocating operating funds rather than delaying the HVAC work. After brief discussion, the board moved and seconded a motion to approve the additional $28,000; the motion carried with all supervisors present recorded voting in the affirmative.
Staff said the additional funds would cover the remainder of equipment purchases for the project. Board members were told that if the separately budgeted server-room expansion resurfaces as a priority, staff would present a new budget request at that time.
