The Romulus Community Schools Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint Antoine Jackson to a vacant trustee seat, approving the appointment 5-0 for the term Oct. 14, 2025, through Dec. 31, 2026.
Board President Portia Laster described the evening’s process before interviews began: “Each candidate will have a total of 30 minutes for their interview,” she said, adding that the board would use a round‑robin format and that members would rank their top three choices. "First choice will be 3 points. Second choice will be 2 points. Third choice will be 1 point," the board later confirmed as the system used to compute the outcome.
The board interviewed five individuals during a special meeting. Candidates who appeared and answered the board’s structured questions included Ashley Capito, Deandre Green, Antwan (Antoine) Jackson, Timothy Sherwood and Tracy Blaylock Phillips; one scheduled candidate did not appear. After all interviews, the board secretary collected rankings, tallied points and the board moved to a public appointment vote under the Open Meetings Act.
Trustee Rogers moved the appointment and Trustee Kennard seconded. During the roll call vote every trustee present voted yes: Rogers, Kennard, Kamal, Laster and Davis. Piles was recorded as excused earlier in the meeting. Following the vote, Jackson was sworn in immediately and took the seat. After the oath he said, "I just wanna say thank you, and I look forward to serving the schools and the community a 100%."
The board had laid out the selection process at the meeting’s start to keep the interviews uniform: candidates began in a holding room, each received the same set of questions in the same order, and had time for closing remarks. The board’s stated goal for the format was to keep the evaluation “fair and consistent” and transparent: Laster said the board would display each member’s top three picks on a screen during tallying.
Next steps described on the record included standard onboarding and administrative steps for the newly seated trustee. Trustees and staff discussed logistical follow‑ups, including contact information exchange and plans for onboarding, but no additional policy decisions were taken during the session.
The appointment fills the board vacancy for the stated term and the newly sworn‑in trustee will participate in upcoming board business and orientation activities.
