Commissioners approve DAR request to add Bev Perdue plaque to courthouse governor boulder

The Craven County Board of Commissioners voted to approve a Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) request to add a plaque honoring former Governor Bev Perdue to an existing granite boulder on the courthouse grounds that already lists earlier governors from Craven County.
Susan Lucas and Sims Waite, members of the local Richard Dobbs Speight chapter of the DAR, said the chapter will donate the plaque and manage the work at no cost to the county. "This will be at no cost to the county," Lucas told the board, describing the project as a gift to the public to recognize women in American history.
The DAR asked the board to provide a letter acknowledging the county's consent to place a plaque on the boulder; the chapter said it will forward the letter to the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C., for national approval. The local chapter indicated approval and fabrication could take about six months.
Commissioners moved, seconded and voted in favor of the request; the chair said staff would prepare the requested letter and the DAR representatives said they would notify the board when a dedication is scheduled.
