Parole hearing for Kennedy Jackson continued at his request after defendant cites pending charges and asks for counsel

A three-member panel of the Committee on Parole continued a revocation hearing for Kennedy Jackson after Jackson requested time to secure counsel and said he had two outstanding criminal charges.
Acting Chair Pete Freeman opened the session at the Saint John Baptist Detention Center and asked Jackson to state his name and DLC number; Jackson identified himself as Kennedy Jackson, 297999. Staff from the Saint John Sheriff's Office told the panel they had seen no problems with Jackson since he arrived at that facility.
Jackson told the panel he was not eligible for appointed counsel and said he wanted to hire an attorney because he had two open charges pending. Freeman told Jackson the board preferred charges be resolved before proceeding and asked whether the panel could continue the hearing. Freeman then put his vote on the record: “My vote today is to continue the hearing to say charges are disposed and subject hires his own attorney.” The other panelists concurred and the panel agreed to continue the matter until Jackson's pending charges are resolved or he retains counsel.
The panel recorded the continuance in open session and said staff would notify Jackson when the charges were disposed and the matter could be rescheduled.
