Waupaca council approves change to minor repairs clause in building code

The Waupaca Common Council on Tuesday adopted an ordinance amending the city’s building-code minor-repairs provision to raise the spending threshold for inspector-authorized waivers to $2,500.
Juliana Stos, the community and economic development director, told the council the update "offers an alternative for smaller scale remodels and alterations, both residential and commercial, to get written authorization to waive the requirement for a building permit." Stos said the amendment preserves permit requirements for projects that affect exits, fire safety or other code-covered elements even when costs are below the new $2,500 threshold.
Councilmember Eric Olsen moved approval; Colin Dykstra seconded. The clerk called the roll and members voted aye; the ordinance passed on second reading.
Stos said the change is intended to reduce administrative burden for minor, low-risk projects while retaining oversight where fire and life-safety systems are affected. The ordinance will be incorporated into the city code and the building-inspection process, staff said.
