The City Council approved Oct. 21 the purchase of three 2026 Dodge Durango police interceptor SUVs under state bid pricing as part of the department’s fleet replacement schedule.
Police Chief (present) told council the department had not replaced patrol vehicles in more than two years and presented the vehicles as part of routine capital replacement. The vehicles were cited as the most cost‑efficient available under current market conditions; the department anticipates some offset from auctioning two older Ford Taurus vehicles.
Councilors asked about alternative fuels and hybrid or electric options. The chief said department experience with a hybrid Explorer produced expensive battery replacements and that industry testing of EV or hybrid police cruisers is ongoing; he said overhead lighting and in‑vehicle equipment also drive vehicle-selection decisions.
Council member Fellows proposed an amendment to reduce the order to two vehicles; that amendment failed. The purchase of three Durangos passed on roll call. The resolution authorizes the police chief to execute necessary purchase documents.
