Summary
Following an incident at Kecoughtan High School that required relocating students to a city facility, board members praised police, transportation and school staff for executing safety protocols and described strong community support.
Board members used their Oct. 1 meeting to describe and commend the division’s response to an incident at Kecoughtan High School that required students to be moved to a city facility.
Board member Cherry said the incident demonstrated the effectiveness of safety systems and partnerships: “HPD did its job. And...the system we have in place to detect weapons, that did its job.” She highlighted the division’s relationship with the city, which allowed students to be moved to a location where they could be fed, receive water and remain safe. Chair Dr. Richard Mason and Superintendent Dr. Raymond Haynes coordinated on site and communicated with the board and community during the response, board members said.
Board members praised bus drivers who were called in to transport students, food service staff who provided meals, school security and the Hampton Police Department for managing the scene. Several members noted the need for debriefs and support for students affected by the incident, and the superintendent reported debriefing meetings and support were underway.
Board members also commended parents and community partners who assisted — one member said food vendors dropped off meals at the convention center while students were relocated. Members emphasized that plans and drills enabled rapid execution during a challenging situation.
