Council approves Destin Elementary addition and Shores at Crystal Beach parking expansion

The City of Destin City Council approved two major development orders during public hearings: a 75,000-square-foot classroom and support-space addition at Destin Elementary School (major development order No. 0015222025) and a parking expansion and related amenities for the Shores at Crystal Beach (major development order No. 0016552025).
City staff told the council that, under statute, school-board projects are exempt from certain local land-development code requirements and that the staff found the Destin Elementary addition consistent with the comprehensive plan; the council approved the development order on a unanimous vote.
The Shores at Crystal Beach item included expansion of an existing western parking lot to add 19 standard spaces and one ADA-accessible space, 34 low-speed-vehicle (LSV) parking spaces, a restroom facility, dune walkover and related infrastructure. The city is technically the applicant on that project; staff recommended approval and the council approved the major development order unanimously, with county partners in attendance.
Both approvals followed staff recommendations that the proposed development orders conform with the comprehensive plan and applicable statutory allowances for school-board projects. No appeals or remands were recorded at the meeting.
