Transit Director Kevin told the board the engine replacement estimate was in the $57,000–$60,000 range and that Ford agreed to cover roughly 55% of the cost after a customer-satisfaction review related to a 2024 service action. The bus had exceeded the typical manufacturer warranty at roughly 66,000 miles (warranties expire at 60,000), and staff said prior service activity suggested earlier damage.
Commissioners approved the resolution to proceed with the engine replacement. During discussion, staff and commissioners noted other fleet maintenance issues: an older 2015 bus with suspected transmission failure and an overall shortfall in funding and federal replacement cycles for transit equipment. Staff said state and federal replacement programs have limited funding windows and criteria, which complicates timely fleet replacement and can leave counties paying higher repair costs on older vehicles.
The board passed the motion to authorize the repair and directed the transit director to continue pursuing manufacturer support where appropriate and to raise the fleet-replacement funding issues with the state during an upcoming district meeting.
