Public commenter seeks county support for Indigenous Peoples festival; youth pageant recognized by commissioners

Nick Tolbert, the lone registered public commenter for the meeting, described plans for an Indigenous Peoples festival that would promote natural/holistic medicine and cultural programming. Tolbert said past events elsewhere drew long lines and that he could assemble a team and secure media exposure; he asked commissioners for pointers and assistance identifying start-up capital. Commissioner Reese responded that the county has adopted a resolution recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day (and does not celebrate Columbus Day), and said the request to hold a festival "goes a little farther" than a proclamation but that commissioners could discuss next steps with Tolbert.
Also on the agenda, the board's "Inspire" recognition went to Shana Donald of Complexion of Perfection, a youth pageant that focuses on celebrating Black history and building self-confidence in K—12 youth. Allison (county staff) introduced Donald, who described the pageant format and said the county's Inspire grant helped grow the program after its first years when the founder had funded the effort personally. Donald said the program aims to expand and to hold pageants across the tri-state area.
Commissioners praised the pageant's emphasis on education, self-confidence and cultural pride and encouraged broader community participation in future events.
No formal county funding decision was made on the Indigenous Peoples festival request at this meeting; commissioners agreed to follow up and speak with the commenter and county staff about possibilities.
