Temecula Valley Unified recognizes 21 students for National Merit honors

The Temecula Valley Unified School District governing board and executive cabinet used the recognitions portion of Thursday’s meeting to spotlight 21 seniors who earned National Merit recognition based on their PSAT scores from October 2024.
Tina May, counselor on special assignment, told the board the National Merit Scholarship Corporation honors the nation’s scholastic champions and that the district was celebrating students who received either a Letter of Commendation or advanced to semifinalist status. May noted that about 1.3 million juniors nationwide took the PSAT last October; roughly 34,000 students were designated as commended and just over 16,000 were named semifinalists.
Temecula Valley Unified recognized six semifinalists: Alexander Samafal (Chaparral High School), Tony Yang (Chaparral High School), Kevin Cowell (Great Oak High School), Divi Nadamotu (Great Oak High School), Charles Zeng (Great Oak High School) and Matthew Dewitt (Temecula Valley High School). The district also recognized 15 commended students from Chaparral, Great Oak and Temecula Valley high schools; the board called students forward individually during the meeting.
The district emphasized the semifinalists will move on in the National Merit process, which can lead to finalist status and scholarship consideration. The board members and the superintendent congratulated all the students for their academic achievements.
