Library board approves $400 sponsorship for ‘tech healthy family’ event with Cottage Grove FSO

The Cottage Grove Library Board voted Oct. 15 to approve a $400 sponsorship and promotional support for a community event on children and technology organized by the Cottage Grove Student Family Organization (FSO).
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 4 at Granite Ridge School. The FSO representative described the program as a community-facing presentation about screen time, smartphones and youth mental health and said the group has secured grants and business donations but is seeking partner promotion and modest sponsorship from local organizations.
“...we are primarily looking for help with publicity. Be it through the village newsletter, the library board, newsletter. If at library programs, you know, if you guys can, share flyers or just promote it a little bit, that would be really helpful,” the FSO representative said. The representative also said she would prepare a resource guide and QR links to recommended books and materials to share at the event.
Library staff confirmed that partnership support and modest sponsorship would be an allowable budget expense. Board members discussed a typical programming cost range of about $200 per program and agreed $200–$400 would fit the library’s planned programming budget. A board member moved to approve $400 to support the program and directed staff to promote the event on library channels.
A motion to approve $400 for the program passed with one abstention. The transcript records the motion as: “I make a motion to approve the $400 for the parent speaker better screen time program with the Cottage Grove FSO plus other partners, and then, with staff direction to, carry it out on all of our channels.” The meeting record shows the motion was seconded and the chair called the vote; an abstention was recorded and the motion carried.
Board members and staff said the library would supply publicity support through social media, the village planner/calendar and the board’s existing newsletter; the board also agreed it could add the library logo to printed flyers and include the event in subsequent library programming materials.
The board asked the FSO to share flyer copies and any resources to be handed out at the event. The FSO representative said additional printed flyers, partner acknowledgments in social posts and partner recognition at the event would be included.
The vote was the formal fiscal action taken at the meeting; the board did not allocate funds for any other programs during this agenda item.
