The Metropolitan Council deferred consideration of an ordinance to establish a Metropolitan Animal Care and Control Commission (BL2025-1061) for two meetings during its Oct. 21, 2025 meeting.
Committee action: Public Health and Safety recommended approval as amended (5 in favor, 1 against, 1 not voting). Rules, Confirmations and Public Elections supported the amendment (4-0-0) but voted to defer the bill two meetings (3 in favor, 2 against). Councilmember Wiener, the sponsor, moved the two-meeting deferral and explained repeated delays and the need to allow the Board of Health to review the proposal at its Nov. 13 meeting. "There have been constant, delays and pushback on this bill from the Department of Health... I am getting looks around there like, what are you doing? There have been constant... I didn't just throw stuff on paper and present it," Wiener said, noting multiple drafts and committee interactions.
Pro Tem Porterfield and other members supported the deferral so the Board of Health could review the draft. The motion to defer carried and the item will return for consideration at a future meeting after the Board of Health has had an opportunity to review the bill.
