Library foundation outlines strategic plan priorities: trust-based philanthropy, collections and expanding donors

Sean (Foundation) presented the Nashville Public Library Foundation's newly approved strategic plan and highlighted three priorities for the next four to five years: continue trust-based philanthropy, grow the donor base and expand advocacy for the library.

Sean described trust-based philanthropy as directing more unrestricted funds toward library priorities and coordinating stewardship with library leadership. He said the foundation has about 1,400 annual donors and wants to grow that number with programs such as library sustainers (recurring small monthly gifts) and broaden events and ambassador outreach.

The foundation is also exploring whether to play a larger role in supporting collections—both physical and digital—while acknowledging Metro provides the primary collection funding. “We could never match what Metro provides in terms of support for the collections,” Sean said, but the foundation is examining ways to supplement collections to reduce waitlists. Sean said the foundation has had success with corporate support and will continue to diversify revenue streams across corporations, individuals and events.

Board members asked about diversifying revenue and small-dollar donor programs; foundation staff said they are researching strategies and will return with more detailed plans. Sean said the foundation will meet with the mayor's office to discuss the library's greatest needs in coming months.
