Nashville Public Library says main library reopening delayed while permits, architectural plans are completed

The Nashville Public Library board was told Tuesday that the main library remains closed while restoration work is paused pending architectural drawings, permits and inspections.
Board members were told restoration consultants and Metro officials have assessed smoke and soot damage caused earlier this year and that parts of the main library—especially the conference center and auditorium—were gutted because materials were saturated with soot. Susan (staff member) told the board the work requires stamped drawings from a licensed architect before the city can issue permits and inspections, delaying active construction and an occupancy decision.
Terry (Library Director) said the library continues to rely on restoration experts and has had Metro codes and the fire marshal on site. “We have to have the stamp drawings before we can pull the permits, before we can do any more work,” Susan said. She told the board the restoration company is working during the interim, but that a reopening date is not yet available.
Board members asked about timelines and process. Susan said the pulled permits and inspections reflect code updates since the building opened 25 years ago and that approximately 40 days of restoration work is estimated after approvals are granted. Terry and Susan said they were coordinating with architects and the restoration contractor to produce plans and move as quickly as possible while prioritizing safety.
Library leadership emphasized that library operations at branches continue. Terry reported systemwide usage and circulation increases since the main library closure and said programs and outreach at branches, the puppet truck and digital services remain active while the main facility is closed.
The board did not set a reopening date and will continue to receive updates. Staff said they expect the overall reopening process to extend into 2026 while permits, stamped drawings and inspections are completed.
