Commission agrees to prepare formal comment opposing right-of-way for proposed WALA water project

Millard County commissioners on Oct. 25 agreed to prepare a formal comment for the federal environmental review process regarding a proposed right-of-way and water project filed by the Central Iron County Water Conservancy District in the Wah Wah Range.
Staff described the project as a request for a right-of-way through BLM lands to pump water to Cedar City for municipal use. Commissioners and staff said the county is coordinating with cooperating agencies and other counties, and that a formal comment is needed to document the county's concerns in the NEPA record. One commissioner said the county should “oppose the right-of-way” and directed staff to draft comments for submission before the public-comment deadline.
County staff said the comment letter is being prepared in coordination with the county attorney's office and cooperating agencies and can be ratified by the commission at a subsequent meeting. Commissioners noted that opposing the right-of-way is a separate administrative track from opposing a state water-right application; both processes may be relevant but are distinct.
