Council approves Eversource petitions to replace low-pressure gas mains on several city streets

The Springfield City Council on Oct. 20 approved four Eversource Gas petitions to replace aging low-pressure cast-iron mains with medium-pressure gas lines on multiple city streets, the Department of Public Works director said.
Chris Signoli, the city’s DPW director, told the council the petitions cover work on Hamden Street (Indian Orchard), Berkshire Street, Chestnut Street, Myrtle Street, Claremont/Orange streets, Derby Dingle and Lakeside Street off Olden Street. He provided linear footage and pipe sizes for each segment: for example, about 2,000 feet of 2-inch pipe on Hamden Street, 470 feet of 6-inch pipe on Berkshire Street, and a 780-foot run of 4-inch pipe on Claremont Street, among other sections. The Derby Dingle submission included two sections — an 8-inch replacement of about 2,000 feet on Springfield Street and about 1,145 feet of 2-inch pipe on Derby Dingle.
Signoli said the work replaces low-pressure infrastructure with medium-pressure mains as part of Eversource’s system upgrades. An Eversource representative was present at the meeting for technical questions.
Councilors raised no objections and the petitions were approved by roll-call vote. Signoli and councilors noted coordination with crews and residents but did not provide a detailed construction schedule at the hearing.
